SOUTH SIDE OF LOG HOME

HOW LONG DO LOG HOMES LAST?

One of the main questions with log homes is their durability. Oftentimes, a downed tree in the forest will quickly rot, growing fungi, mosses, and other plants, and becoming a home for woodland critters. Potential homeowners may think of these downed trees when picturing a log home and wonder how durable a wood home really is.

In reality, a well-built wood home can stand for generations. Log homes can last for as long as a century when constructed well in an ideal location. Much like any home, the quality of construction and location plays a big factor in determining how long the log home will last.

Realistically, a log cabin or wood homemade from quality construction can last 50 to 80 years, and up to 100 in an ideal location. So what does it take to ensure your wood home lasts this long?

Structure

Like any home, if the “bones,” or structure, of the home is good, the house is on the right track for longevity. The structure of the home is the frame on which the rest of the home sits, so it is difficult to repair later if constructed poorly in the first place. Additionally, it is important to maintain the wood and logs of the cabin annually to keep the structure in good shape. This includes checking for cracks and holes, inspecting for water damage, and doing regular repairs.

Materials

Not all wood is created equal. Log homes should be made from properly dried and treated logs, which gives the wood advanced water resistance and overall protection.

Location

It’s true what they say – location, location, location! The spot you choose for your wood home plays a big role in how well the log home stands the test of time. A wood home should be built in a location that does not see excessive standing water or long periods of direct sun. Landscaping like bushes and shrubs should be planted at least six feet away from the exterior walls.

Upkeep

In addition to the build of the home, wood homes need to be regularly maintained. Just like any home, the more you care for the structure, the longer it will last. This includes regularly cleaning the wood, staining and sealing the structure, and repairing cracks, chips, or holes.
